The Federal Reserve cut its target range by 25 bps to 3.50%-3.75% on Wednesday, December 10, as expected, marking the 3rd straight reduction of 2025.

The central bank voted 9–3, the first time since 1988 that 3 officials formally dissented. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee and Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid opposed the move and preferred to hold rates steady, while Fed Governor Stephen Miran argued for a larger 50-basis-point cut.
Including the 6 so called “silent” dissents, officials who attend Fed meetings, share views, and provide projections (published in the Summary of Economic Projections, or dot plot) but do not have a formal vote at that meeting, the total number of dissents rose to 9, matching levels last seen in 2013. As a reminder, there are 19 total participants, 7 governors and 12 regional bank presidents.
