This is a small data supplement to the latest analysis about the US consumer. If you have already read the article, you know that Americans are drowning in a massive amount of debt.

Importantly, that debt does not include Buy Now, Pay Later transactions which hit a record $94 billion in 2024, according to eMarketer data. This means the real indebtness among consumers is even worse than what is officially reported.

Importantly, the forecast of rising BNPL in the graph will not materialize if a recession indeed hits the US.

Switching gears, Atlanta Fed updated its GDPNow model and it is now showing the US economy might be contracting in Q1 2025 by 2.4% (up from -2.8% previously).

In fact, the US economy is likely not shrinking by as much.
