US consumers are increasingly unable to cover emergency expenses
Inflation and prices are the main Americans' financial challenges
More than 50% of US consumers are not able to cover a $2,000 emergency expense using only savings.
Nearly one-third cannot cover $500, according to the Fed survey released Wednesday.

Additionally, a 37% of surveyed Americans described inflation and prices as the main financial challenges they had to cope with in 2024.
Respondents, in particular, were mentioning the rising cost of food and groceries.

To put this into perspective, in 2023, 2022, and 2016, the share was 35%, 33%, and 8%, respectively.
US consumers are struggling.
