⚠️The US economy has never been more dependent on the wealthiest Americans

The top 10% accounts now for roughly half of all consumer spending in America

The top 10% now account for roughly 50% of all consumer spending in the US, up from around 35% in 1995.

This means the top 10% drive about 35% of US GDP, since personal consumption makes up 70% of the economy.

In contrast, the bottom 60% account for just 19% of consumption, down from ~26% in 1995.

Meanwhile, the top 1% now own 51% of household equities — up 8 percentage points since 1989. The top 10% control 87%.

At the same time, the bottom 90% share is just 13%, down from 20% in the 1990s.

The poorest 50% own only 1% of stocks.

The wealth gap keeps widening, a built-in feature of the financial system that favors asset holders.
