Over the last 12 months, the federal budget deficit totaled $2.0 trillion or 6.7% of US GDP, up from 6.1% in May 2024.

This comes as the US government spending has been at one of the highest levels in history, only below the 2020 Crisis response.

Interestingly, the Treasury Department also posted a record $22.8 billion in customs-duties revenue for May, up $17 billion, or 270%, from the same month a year earlier. This helped somewhat to shrink the budget deficit.
