As some major US indices have already fallen over 20% from their all-time highs we may assume that we are near or in the so-called bear market.

History suggests that during such periods markets are very volatile in both directions. Therefore, in bear markets, we will likely see sharp stock market gains called bear market rallies.

They tend to occur when positive news comes up providing some hope to investors or when there is no negative news for a some period giving an impression that the worst might be behind. At the same time, the big (negative) picture remains unchanged..

In other words, bear markets make fools of both bulls and bears. Sticking to the investing strategy is key during these periods.
